Polymerization: Turning Molecules into Plastic
The raw material obtained is subjected to a chemical process called polymerization, where small molecules (monomers) are linked together to create long chains (polymers). After polymerization, the plastic is cooled and cut into tiny pellets or granules. The pellets are easy to transport, store, and melt in the manufacturing process. They are the standard raw material for the plastic product manufacturer.
Manufacturing Processes
There are several common processes to transform plastic pellets into end products:
- Injection Molding: Molten plastic is injected into a mold to make products like containers, lids, and kitchen items.
- Blow Molding: Used to produce hollow objects such as bottles and tanks.
- Extrusion: Produces long shapes such as plastic sheets or pipes.
- Thermoforming: Melts plastic sheets and shapes them – ideal for trays and packaging.
