4 Types of Safe Food-grade Plastics
البولي إيثيلين (PE)
Features: low temperature resistance, good flexibility, widely used in fresh-keeping bags, food packing film and bottles of milk. According to density, it is divided into low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), the former can be used for film packing, and the latter for hard pack such as milk jugs.
Safety: high chemical stability, not easy to react with food, and is a recognized safe material.
البولي بروبلين (PP)
Features: high temperature resistance (can withstand microwave heating), corrosion resistance, commonly used in microwave lunch boxes, fresh-keeping boxes and bottle caps. Its high melting point (about 160°C) makes it an ideal choice for heating scenarios.
Safety: non-toxic and odorless, FDA and other international certifications, suitable for long-term contact with food.
بولي إيثيلين تيريفثاليت (PET)
Features: high transparency, good sealability, used mainly in bottles for beverages and disposable food containers.
Precautions: trace amounts of chemicals may be released at high temperatures, it is recommended to avoid long-term heating or repeated use.
بولي كربونات (PC)
Features: It has been used in space cups and baby bottles, but you need to pay attention to the bisphenol A (BPA) problem.
Safety: You need to choose certified products that meet the BPA residue standard. Infant and toddler products should be used with caution.
Plastic Materials to Avoid
- Polyvinyl chloride (PVC): Plasticizers and heavy metals may be added during processing. It is easy to release toxic substances at high temperatures and is not recommended for food packaging.
- Polystyrene (PS): Commonly found in disposable tableware, it will release styrene monomer when heated, posing a potential health risk.
How to Choose Safe Food-grade Plastics?
Check the Logo
The internationally accepted plastics logo is a triangle number 1-7, and the corresponding safe materials are:
1 (PET): Beverage bottle
2 (HDPE): Milk can
4 (LDPE): Plastic wrap
5 (PP): Microwave container.
Certification Standards
Choose plastics marked with “food grade” or passed national/international standards (such as China GBn84-80 polyethylene standard, US FDA certification).
Use Scenario Matching
Refrigerated preservation: PE or PP materials are preferred.
Microwave heating: Only PP materials can be used safely.
Long-term storage: Ensure that the container is well sealed and avoid light and high temperature environments.
